The Chance of Survival

In the race for survival after a heart attack, every second counts. The difference between life and death in the vast majority of cases can be measured by the time it takes to administer on-the-spot help to the casualty.

Newmachar Community First Responders will, on a rota basis, supply the rapid response that is so vital to survival. The First Responders will bridge the gap between the onset of the heart attack and the arrival of the Scottish Ambulance Service. Once an Ambulance Paramedic is despatched, a call will also be placed to activate the local First Responder who will often be first on scene to deliver vital early life saving skills.

85% of victims have the potential to survive.

The chance of survival is decreased by 10% for every minute that emergency treatment is delayed. 

The Community First Responder's scheme is a national initiative launched by Lifesavers UK. Working in close partnership with the Scottish Ambulance Service, Lifesavers UK are helping create a growing network of community-based volunteer teams trained in lifesaving techniques.
When you dial 999 for an ambulance in Newmachar, the Scottish Ambulance Service will activate a First Responder (if appropriate) to bridge the gap before the Ambulance Paramedic arrives. We will respond to calls for emergency help relating to specific types of emergencies, e.g. chest pains or suspected heart attacks, choking, collapse etc.
